The Project and Design:

The key design principle of the new Victoria Leisure Centre building combines old with new, retaining the current main entrance and in particular the existing clock which is a well known local landmark. Positioning the building adjacent to Gedling Street enhances the setting of existing buildings and the new Sneinton Market Square.

Some key design features of the new leisure centre include:

• A new pool hall facing out over the new Sneinton Market Square, with glazing that gives a clear view of the Square and sky when swimming

• A learner pool next to the main swimming pool with predominantly indirect lighting and openings between the two spaces for passive observation between the two

• A 'Splash Zone' for young users, designed for the under 5's to enable them to enjoy the facility without having to access the other pools. The Splash Zone concentrates on simple water features and passive observation of the area is possible from the main pool

• A spacious lobby with more space to queue for entry to the facility, to read notice boards and meet friends

• A café adjacent to the main entrance lobby in a space which is bright and airy and offers a calming contrast to the bustling market square through which users have just entered

• Generous changing facilities that are organised, flexible in size and can accommodate groups and facilities for individuals with disabilities

• A fitness studio and health suite at first floor level that can be accessed directly from the foyer
